Genesis 30
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.
rule us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.
5 Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. 6 He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”
9 Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”
8 His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually
10 When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?” 11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.
Sunday August 24 - The back story
This is the account of Jacob’s family line. Joseph, a young man of
seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers... Genesis 37:2
Today, we begin a new series based on the life of Joseph – a journey through 13 chapters of Genesis, more chapters than those given to his great grandfather Abraham, and more than to his grandfather Isaac and his father Jacob put together! There is so much to be learnt from Joseph’s chequered life; throughout which we will see a wonderful foreshadowing of the life of Jesus. Joseph was loved by his father, despised and rejected by his brothers who schemed to kill him, sold for pieces of silver, stripped of his robe, left to die, cast into a pit... only later to appear again to become their saviour and lord.
‘He was loved and hated, favoured and abused, tempted and trusted, exalted and abased. Yet at no point in the 110-year life of Joseph did he ever seem to get his eyes off God or cease to trust him. Adversity did not harden his character. Prosperity did not ruin him. He was the same in private as in public. He was a truly great man.’ (James Boice).
Joseph was the eleventh of twelve sons born to Jacob. His mother Rachel died during the birth of his younger brother, Benjamin. In the days ahead we will see God’s plans being fulfilled through a man born into a dysfunctional family, facing huge adversity, and yet constantly knowing God’s grace, guidance and strength throughout.
Father, thank you that you take the weak things of this world to confound the wise (1 Corinthians 1:27). Please increase my faith. Amen.
