An art historian/critic was looking at my series Works on Paper. I’m happy to say he really liked the pictures, but he wondered how would I know when to stop. My first thought was that he was telling me maybe it’s time to give up.
I admit that it’s hard to know when I’m just making more of the same thing. I answered him “I stop when it becomes an exercise in filling space and time.”
I’m reminded of a quote from Jasper Johns: “Do something, do something to that, and then do something to that.”
