If you’re trying to throw a noose over something – to recover an object Strength
that’s fallen overboard, for example – and you can’t quite remember how Security
to tie a real lasso (page 120), the running bowline will probably do the job Diffi culty Tying
                                                                            Diffi culty Untying
just as well. It’s quick and easy to tie because, after all, everyone knows
                                                                            Usefulness
how to tie a bowline – don’t they?

1 Put a bight in the end of the line... 2 ... and put an overhand loop 3 Pass the working end around
in the working end. the standing part...

                                          5 Pass the working end
                                          around the nearest leg of
the bight, and tuck it into
                                          the loop. Tighten the knot.
                                          The bowline should run
                                          free on the standing part.

4 ... and back down through
          the loop.
