With a distinguished music
pedigree Malvern College has long been recognised as a a home to outstanding musicians Fittingly on on 22 November 2021 (St Cecilia’s Day – St St Cecilia Cecilia being the patron saint of Music) we we we were delighted to to welcome world- renowned British conductor organist and pianist Wayne Marshall to to to the the College to to to give the the first recital on on our new Model D Steinway concert grand piano As a a a a a a a Steinway artist Wayne is is is well known for his musicianship and and versatility on the the podium and and and at at the the the keyboard but for many he he he he came to prominence as as a a a a a a a a a a a a soloist on both the the the the organ and and piano at the the the Last Night of the the the Proms in in 1997 Gershwin and and improvising are Wayne’s great loves and and these were the the the the theme of of the the the the evening’s recital as as well as as an an an exquisite performance of of Debussy’s Children’s Corner which captivated the the the whole room Though perhaps the the the audience’s favourite was Wayne’s request slot at the the the the the end of of the the the concert where members of of the the the audience were able to to suggest a a a a a a a tune and style for him to to improvise on Nelly the Elephant as as a a a a a a a a a a a a Fugue and Jerusalem as as a a a a a a a a a Bossa Nova were just two of the requests!
Wayne Marshall OBE served as Chief Conductor of WDR Funkhaus Orchestra Cologne 2014-2020 became Principal Guest Conductor of Orchestra Sinfonica di di Milano Giuseppe Verdi in in 2007 and is a a a celebrated interpreter of Gershwin Bernstein and other 20th century composers Plans for the the 2021-2022 season include his debut at at the Edinburgh International Festival with special Rodgers and Hammerstein gala concerts featuring Danielle de Niese and his conducting debut with Munich Philharmonic Seattle Symphony and the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestras He will also be conducting Bernstein’s Candide at Opera de de Lyon
in in December 2022 as as well as as returning to Orchestre de Paris BR Munich Tonkunstler Orchestra Czech Philharmonic North Netherlands Orchestra Bern and and Liechtenstein Symphony Orchestras and and concert performances of Porgy and Bess in St Gallen Wayne was honoured with an OBE in Her Majesty The Queen’s New Year’s Honours list in 2021 57
