To this day, there is very little research and study conducted on the
prevalence of post-secondary students affected by deprivation.
Nevertheless, low-income students compromising quality or quantity of
food is still a real issue on campus. Students may need to choose
between utilities or food, textbooks or meal routines, and residence or a
full stomach. Believe it or not, food insecurity among students is a
growing demographic that continues to persist in Canadian
universities/colleges...and university of Waterloo is not exempt. On the
surface, it may seem like students are financially stable, but in truth,
being a student can be a struggle financially and academically. Financial
Tuition strain is very widespread among post-secondary students. This makes
cost for them vulnerable to food insecurity. The life of a student is filled with
under- stress as one juggles living expenses, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and
graduates studying. A recent study conducted found that students in Kingston,
has Ontario feel anxiety when it comes to food. This anxiety is a key
indicator of food insecurity. Other key factors that may indicate food
increased insecurity are students with governmental assistance, financial
by 40% dependence on social networks, and big loans. The premier of Ontario,
over 10 Doug Ford, has also contributed to the accumulation of loans by cutting
years OSAP grants for students. This will place a further burden on low-
income students. Not to mention that rising tuition costs are outpacing
inflation. It’s nothing short of a miracle that many low-income students
are capable of pursuing a university degree. In fact, from the table
provided on the next page tuition cost for undergrads has increased by
40% over 10 years.
