THE ASHLEY BOOK OF KNOTS
2992. A TEN-STRAND TWILL SINNET (hold five strands in the lett
hand). Move the left upper strand over one, under three to center.
Move the right upper strand over one, under three, over one to
center. Move the left upper strand over one, under three, to center.
Move the right upper strand over one, under four, to center.
2993. A FOUR-STRAND "TRICK" SINNET. Superficially this appears
to belong with the TWILL SINNETS, and if it is made firmly and not
roughly used, its shortcomings will not be at once apparent. But
actually it does not "jell." To expose its weakness, grasp the two ends
and give a series of sharp jerks and somewhere in its length will
appear a separation of strands. Grasp the two halves at this point
and pull them strongly apart and the sinnet at once resolves itself
into two separate two-strand ropes with opposite lays.
To make: With three strands in the left hand, lead the lett upper
strand to the center, then at once lead the next left upper strand to
the center parallel with the first. Lead the right upper strand to the
center, and then at once lead the next right upper strand to the
center. Continue laying first two left. strands and then two right
strands one after the other.
Before this has been separated into two parts it is easily mistaken
for SIX-STRAND SINNET ('# 297 I ).
2994. The remainder of the sinnets on this page are flat and have
a doubled edge. The present one of the series is so narrow, however,
that its cross section is oblong. It must be platted very firmly. Hav-
ing made certain that you have followed directions correctly, do
not feel concern about its success. Having made the desired length,
beat it well with a mallet first along its edge, then along the flat.
Finally its surfaces will appear as depicted in the center and right
diagntms.
To make: Take six strands (four in the left hand). First lead the
left strand over one, under two. Second, lead the right strand over
two. Third, lead the left strand under one, over two. Fourth, lead
the right strand under two. Repeat from the beginning.
2995. A SEVEN-STRAND DOUBLED-EDGE FLAT SINNET (hold four
strands in the left hand). Lead the upper left strand over two, under
one. Lead the right upper strand under one, over two. Lead the left
upper strand under two, over one. Lead the right upper strand over
one, under two. Repeat.
2996. An EIGHT-STRAND DOUBLED-EDGE FLAT SINNET (hold five
strands in the left hand). Lead the left strand under one, over two,
under one to center. Lead the right strand under one, over two to
center. Lead the left strand over one, under two, over one to center.
Lead the right strand over one, under two to center.
2997. A TEN-STRAND DOUBLED-EDGE FLAT SINNET (hold six strands
in the left hand). Lead the left under two, over two, under one to
center. Lead the right under two, over two to center. Lead the left
over two, under two, over one to center. Lead the right over two,
under two to center.
2998. An ELEVEN-STRAND DOUBLED-EDGE FLAT SINNET (hold six
strands in the left hand). Lead the left upper strand under one,
over two, under one, over one. Lead the right upper strand under
