me as she had a roping saddle on that prevented rolling.
There I lay, looking up through the water, securely pinned to the bottom of the river and oddly, the first thought that went through my mind was, “I wonder if death-bed repentance would have any value?” I had roughly 30 seconds to find out before I would drown.
Living Healthy Till 100TM
The whole point of living Healthy Till 100TM isn’t necessarily to live to 100, but rather to live fully, with great health, purpose, and cash flow to the end. Had I not been rescued, I would say that my life would have been a successful Healthy Till 100TM life. When this accident happened, I’d visited over 45 countries, had a wonderful wife and family of eight children who participated with me in horse riding, mountain biking, ballroom dancing, and flying as a pilot, as well as my contributions to church and community. All my children had traveled with me throughout the world. The end of this story shows how powerful a Healthy Till 100TM life can be when your life’s on the line.
The Rescue
Before I needed to draw my first breath under water, I popped to the surface of the river and was able to grab the shore and keep myself from floating down the river. The first thing I do during an accident is to check to see if I can move my toes. I moved my left toes, and all was well. I went to move my right toes...and there were no toes, they were way off to the right of where my leg should be. I knew at that point I was seriously injured.
Then my son grabbed me by the armpits and dragged me up the river to where the bank was flat enough he could beach me. He ran to his horse, galloped home, and called emergency
services to come and get me. They basically kept me knocked out for 4 days. When I regained consciousness, I found my injuries included a horribly shattered right femur, most ribs were broken, the lowest lumbar disc was “burst”, meaning it was broken and pieces were pushed into my spinal cord, and the other four lumbar discs were broken. The doctor said it was rare that a person walks after a burst lumbar like mine.

The Miracle
The first question I asked after becoming conscious was, “How did Jared get the horse off me?” I heard the answer and for the first time since the accident, felt fear. My fifteen-year old son turned around just in time to see me fall into the river. He jumped off his horse, ran to the riverbank, and could see my leg sticking out beneath the horse. The impression hit him to jump in the river and bulldog the horse off me.
Bulldogging is a rodeo sport where a 200+ lb. cowboy jumps from his horse, grabs the horns of a 600 lb. steer, and twists its head until the steer comes to a stop and rolls over. My 125 lb. son jumped into the river, grabbed the head of my 1000 lb. horse with a roping saddle on, and twisted with enough torque and power to flip the
