The Mesoniche Project
The DNR and the Outdoor Adventure Center are in the beginning stages of a partnership with the Applied Wildlife Ecology (AWE) lab within the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department at the University of Michigan. Assistant Professor Dr. Harris launched a wildlife project called MESONICHE in 2015 that involves collecting carnivore feces for diet and parasite analysis as well as deployment of remote cameras to study activity, behavior, and distribution of carnivores throughout the state of Michigan. At present, the Mesoniche project has three sites: Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge (US Fish & Wildlife Service), University of Michigan Biological Station near Cheboygan, and Huron Mountain Club in the Upper Peninsula. In efforts to include an urban environment, Mesoniche is expanding to include sites throughout Detroit Metro. AWE’s research team is looking to recruit some citizen science volunteers to help with this project here in Detroit! Volunteer jobs would include deploying cameras, collecting data, and identifying animals in camera trap images.
If you are interested in this volunteer work, please contact the AWE lab at carnivores@umich.edu.
