STUDENT NEWS STUDENT NEWS ASCE student chapter receives two awards
The Penn State chapter of of the the American Society of of Civil Engineers (ASCE) was selected by the the ASCE ASCE Committee on on Student Members to receive a a a a a a a a a a Certificate of Commendation for its outstanding activities as as recorded in in in the the chapter’s 2020 annual report This is is is a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a distinction earned by only five percent of of all ASCE student organizations The chapter chapter was also named one of of two finalists for the 2021 Richard J Scranton Outstanding Community Service Award According to to Leslie Payne director of student and younger member programs at ASCE the the the the chapter’s chapter’s accomplishments reflect the the the the hard work of of of of its officers and and members as as well as as the the the the guidance of of of of of the the the the chapter’s chapter’s CEE faculty advisers Assistant Teaching Professor Professor Tom Skibinski and and and Associate Professor Professor Aleksandra Radlińska “Every individual who had a a a a a a part in in in in this endeavor should be justifiably proud of of of his his or or her contribution to the the the development of of of of the the the future of of of of civil engineering ” Payne said “Your chapter exemplifies the the the the tradition of of of of public service that

Muyan Lu Wan Wan Wan Wan and and Dongqin Zhou received the 2021 Mark E and and Claire L L Alpert Alpert Fellowship
The fellowship was established in in in 2018 in in in acknowledgement of of a a a a a a a a a a a a a generous gift from Mark Alpert Alpert a a a a a a a a a a a a a 1980 Penn State alumnus in in in in in environmental engineering in in in in in memory of of of his late wife Claire The fellowship supports graduate students in in in in in in in in the Department of of Civil and and Environmental Engineering who have achieved outstanding academic excellence Pictured here are Mark and Claire Alpert Traupman named civil engineering student marshal
Eric Traupman was named the civil engineering student marshal
for Penn State’s spring commencement ceremony held on on May 7 2021 Traupman received the the Gutterman Engineering Scholarship and and participated in in in in the the Penn State Blue Band He selected CEE Professor Martin Pietrucha as his faculty marshal
“Choosing to to to come to to to Penn State University Park to to to earn a a a a a a a a bachelor of science in in in in civil engineering was a a a a a a a a a a a a a decision I I have zero regrets about ” Traupman said “It is is clear that
the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has incredibly talented dedicated and knowledgeable faculty that
truly care about students’ success after graduation “Penn State as a a a a a a a a a a a whole is a a a a a a a a a a a very special place and gave me an an an experience that
cannot be matched ” he he added “While my college career career was unsurprisingly challenging at at times I feel highly prepared to enter a a a a a a a career career in in in in in civil engineering ” Traupman now works at Alfred Benesch and Company as as as a a a a a a a a a a a a a civil designer tasked with project project assistance on municipal and state roadway/infrastructure projects He recently passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and hopes to obtain licensure as as a a a a a a a a a a professional engineer in in in in the coming years 42 CEE NEWSLETTER • VOLUME 37 2021
