This book provides information for and about transgender people. It concludes with
more than 40 pages of resources, including lists of television shows and movies,
agencies, children’s books, books about teens, and legal and faith resources among
others.
• Jenkins, C., & Cart, M. (2018) Representing the rainbow in young adult literature:
LGBTQ+ content since 1969. Lanham, MD: Rowman and Littlefield.
The authors provide a critical review of books and other resources for young adults.
The work is an updated resource for librarians and other educators that can aid in
finding fiction that features LGBTQ+ themes and well-rounded characters.
• Kuklin, S. (2014). Beyond magenta: Transgender teens speak out. Somerville, MA:
Candlewick Press.
This book shares the stories of six transgender teens, focusing on their transitions.
The stories reveal the diversity among the teens, highlight the common challenges
many faced, and provide a revelatory look at what it means to be a transgender teen.
The book includes a list of service and advocacy organizations.
• National Geographic, January 2017.
The issue provides a series of articles that discuss the changing definition of gender.
The article by Henig presents recent scientific findings that help describe new
understandings in genetics and brain research. Another essay describes gender from
the perspectives of children from four continents. It is an easily accessible issue that
will inform and challenge thinking about gender.
• Nutt, A. (2015). Becoming Nicole: The transformation of an American family. New
York: Random House.
Of all the books read in preparing this article, this provided the most intimate look
at a transgender girl and the impact of her transition on her adoptive parents, her
twin brother, and on the laws in the state of Maine. As a review included on the book
cover stated, “If you aren’t moved by Becoming Nicole, I’d suggest there’s a lump of dark
matter where your heart should be.”—The New York Times

This is an excellent primer on ways to support transgender students. Chapters describe
legal issues, tips for creating inclusive schools, and general guidelines for supporting
transgender students.
