                                                in 2021











                              n May 5, 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation designating the first
                              full week of May as Correctional Officers Week. Whether civilian or security staff,
                 Othe importance of those who serve in local correctional facilities cannot be overstated
                 because of their important roles.
                   Those in the corrections profession can easily identify with the depth and spirit found in the con­
                 text of the nearly 40­year­old proclamation. This was the beginning of a new mindset as we began
                 to recognize that correctional officers are not “guards,” but trained professionals.
                   On the following pages, American Jails shares some of the celebrations from National Correctional
                 Officers and Employees Week in 2021.
