Gibson’s Journey #2
Gibson and his growing family are currently enrolled in
the OAP (PPO) plan. Can Gibson save money by
switching to the HSA PPO plan?
(The OAP (PPO) benefit plans are changing this year, and their
out-of-pocket cost may increase)
Gibson is considering the HSA PPO plan for his family’s medical benefits this year, but he’s worried
about the high deductible costs. However, he understands now that QSC deposits $90 per paycheck
($2,340 over 12 months) into his HSA account and he can use the HSA Advance feature to access his
future HSA contributions—paying for his deductible while his HSA balance grows. Gibson also
compares the cost of the OAP (PPO) plan, which is also a lot of money out of his paycheck.
Gibson looks back at family health care costs for last year. His kids went to the doctor for sick visits
three times. His wife had her annual well-woman visit and Gibson takes High Blood Pressure (HBP)
medication. Gibson remembered that the Cigna app has a cost calculator to determine what health
care services cost.
In all, he spends about: (these calculations are over a 12-month period)
Last Year | OAP PPO Last Year | OAP PPO
$25 per Sick Visit x 3 = $75 $100 per Sick Visit x 3 = $300*
Well Woman Visit = $0 Well Woman Visit = $0
$10 per generic medication x 12 = $120 $24 per generic medication x 12 = $288**
Total Annual Health Care Cost = $195 Total Annual Health Care Cost = $588
QSC’s HSA Contribution = $2,340
Net Annual Health Care Cost = $0
*This is an estimated cost for a contracted provider for a doctor visit before the HSA PPO plan deductible is met.
**This medication cost was based on using Good Rx to find the cheapest generic of a HBP medication.
The same types of services on the HSA PPO plan would cost about $588 or less, depending on how
much he shops around for providers and services. He also saves over $3,000 annually in employee
premium contributions.
Besides the lower per paycheck costs for the HSA PPO plan, Gibson:
• Has the HSA Advance allowing him to access to his future HSA contributions
• Will never lose the money he and QSC contributes to his HSA account
• Can use the Limited Purpose FSA (up to $2,700) to pay for dental and vision expenses
Breaking down all the benefits for Gibson’s family, it makes financial sense to move to the HSA
PPO plan! If he doesn’t, he will lose money and won’t have a health savings account for the future.
