         Retiree Health & Welfare Benefits

See plans offered to retirees of the SBCEO on the Intranet by selecting Planning Your Retirement under the Employee
         Benefits tab.
Employees must qualify as a retiree of PERS/STRS in order to be eligible for health and welfare benefits as a retiree with the
SBCEO (minimum 5 years of service credit and at least 50 years old). You must be enrolled in an SBCEO medical or dental
plan as an active employee in order to be eligible for continuation coverage as a retiree on an SBCEO retiree plan. Once
employees retire from the SBCEO they are eligible for continuation of group coverage at their own expense for as long as
premium payments are made. Retirees may continue dependent coverage at their own expense for as long as premiums are
paid and the dependent remains eligible; however, a dependent cannot continue coverage unless the retiree continues
         coverage, except as explained below.

If the retiree does not elect coverage upon retirement eligibility, he/she will not be eligible to enroll at a later date. If the
retiree elects coverage and does not elect dependent coverage upon retirement eligibility, he/she will not be able to enroll
the dependent until a subsequent open enrollment period (effective October 1 each year). Should a retiree die, the enrolled
dependent may continue coverage for as long as premium payments are made.
Employees who were on the SBCEO payroll on or before January 1, 1986, who retire after 20 years of full-time service with
the SBCEO, will have their one-party health insurance premium paid by the SBCEO until the retiree has attained the age of
Medicare eligibility, (currently age 65). At that time, the retiree may take Medicare only or remain part of the group health
plan by paying for his/her own coverage. Employees who began their employment after January 1, 1986 will not be eligible
         for this employer-paid benefit.

Retiree Medical Plans Available through the SBCEO

SISC, our insurance administrator, offers retirees coverage based on Medicare eligibility. We refer to these plans as either
over- or under-age-65 plans. We have five district plans for under- age-65 retirees and five district plans for over-age-65
retirees, plus a Medicare Supplement plan. District plans mirror active employee plans except with the over-age-65 plans,
SISC requires the retiree be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B.

With over-age-65 district plans, the following applies:
 Medicare must provide benefits first to any services covered by both Medicare and these plans.
 For services received that are covered both by Medicare and these plans, these plans will apply only to Medicare
deductibles, coinsurance and other charges for covered services over and above what Medicare pays.
 The combination of benefits will not exceed expense for services.

Individual Retiree Plan (IRP) / Companion Care:
In addition to district retiree plans, SISC offers an Individual Retiree Plan, namely Anthem Blue Cross Companion Care. An IRP
is available to retirees turning age 65 and enrolled in Medicare Parts A & B. Companion Care is a supplement to Medicare
and is also known as a Medigap plan similar to plan F in the Individual Market.

CalPERS/CalSTRS 401a Defined Contribution Benefit Pension Plans
Employees who will retire with CalPERS (California Public Employee Retirement System) or CalSTRS (California State Teachers
Retirement System) should plan on attending the relevant seminar offered when presented during the year, usually in the
spring and fall. Both retirement systems offer retirement calculators on their website to determine your retirement amount
and best date of retirement. To view the retirement calculators go to:
