 BATTERSEA SOUTH
THE NEW BUILDING
The Royal College of Art’s strategic plan articulates a bold vision to marry creative arts and design with science, technology and medicine. This marks a ‘step change’ for the RCA, as it applies creative insights to evidence-based science in order to address global challenges.
The new campus at Battersea is the physical manifestation of this ambition. The 15,000 m2 development, which has full planning permission, will transform the Royal College of Art by delivering enhanced workshop and studio space for students, as well as communal and social facilities
to create a meeting point for talent and ideas.
The additional facilities at Battersea South will deliver:
THE STUDIO BUILDING
1 Studios and Workshops
Four storeys of studios and workshops delivering enlarged and enhanced facilities for Sculpture and Contemporary Art Practice, Moving Image (video and film), and the School of Design, including Fashion and Textiles. Designed as social and educational spaces
of creative transfer and collaboration, the studios will also accommodate temporary exhibitions and large-scale works.
2 Hangar
Battersea South will provide a dramatic, multifunctional gallery space at the heart of the reconfigured campus. Taking the form of a double-height covered street or agora, the hangar will become the focal point for RCA artists and makers, and their interactions with the public. The scale of the hangar will allow many functions in response to teaching and research across the RCA, including a range of configurations for events, screenings, performances, exhibitions and graduate shows; and a large-scale making area, for use by students, extending adjacent workshops.
3 Robotics Hangar
A smaller additional hangar and gallery space will provide flexible research testing and assembly areas for intelligent mobility, design engineering, sculpture and robotics.
