 THE RESEARCH BUILDING
4 Research
The new building will provide five floors of dedicated independent and confidential research space for areas such as materials science, soft robotics, advanced manufacturing and intelligent mobility.
5 The Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design
The building will provide a new home for the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design, which
undertakes design research and projects with industry that contribute to improving
people’s lives. The largest and longest-running centre for design research at the RCA, the
Centre’s approach is inclusive and interdisciplinary across three research areas: design 8 for a more inclusive society; creating safer and better health services; and using people-
centred design methods to deliver research projects that have social and global impact.
6 InnovationRCA
Battersea South will house InnovationRCA, the RCA’s centre for enterprise, entrepreneurship, incubation and business support, which helps students and graduates transform compelling ideas into successful businesses, and strengthens the College’s culture of design innovation and entrepreneurialism. Expanding the university’s incubator programme will see the number of supported start-up businesses double (doubling the footprint of the Clore Innovation Centre).
7 Seminar & Conference Facility
The top floor of the Research Building will house a new seminar and conference facility
for use by the College and external partners.
8 BREEAM
Sustainability and energy efficiency are central to the Battersea South development. Approximately £3 million will be invested in making the building BREEAM excellent, through a combination of integrated design and most significantly a commitment to low and zero carbon technologies.
The new facilities at Battersea will provide a sustainable future for the Royal College of Art, ensuring the continuation of our global contribution as the number one university for art and design.
