Paragraph Comprehension Test

Questions 43 - 45 are based on the following passage.

          43. Many accidents and injuries can be prevented if employees learn to be more
careful. Wearing shoes with badly worn soles or open toes can easily lead to foot
injuries from tacks, nails and chair legs. Loose or torn clothing should not be
worn near moving machinery. When supplies are stored, they should be placed
or piled so that nothing sticks out of the pile.
If an employee is injured, no matter how small the injury, he or she should report
it to the supervisor and have the injury treated. A small cut not attended to can
easily become infected and can cause more trouble than some injuries that at
first seem more serious. It never pays to take chances.

According to the passage, an employee who gets a slight cut should
                 (A) have it treated to help prevent infection.
                 (B) know that a slight cut becomes more easily infected than a big cut.
                 (C) pay no attention to it as it can’t become serious.
                 (D) realize that it is more serious than any other type of injury.

          44. According to the passage, you should NOT wear loose clothing when you are

                 (A) in a corridor.
                 (B) storing supplies.
                 (C) moving chairs.
                 (D) near moving machinery.

          45. According to the passage, it is NOT true that

                 (A) by being more careful, employees can reduce the number of accidents.
                 (B) women should wear shoes with open toes for comfort when working.
                 (C) supplies should be piled so that nothing is sticking out from the pile.
                 (D) if an employee sprains his or her wrist at work, he or she should tell the supervisor about it.

Numerous benefits to the employer as well as to the worker have resulted from
          46.
physical examinations of employees. Such examinations are intended primarily
as a means of increasing efficiency and production, and they have been found to
                                                 accomplish these ends.

The passage best supports the statement that physical examinations
                 (A) may serve to increase output.
                 (B) are required in some plants.
                 (C) often reveal serious defects previously unknown.
                 (D) always are worth more than they cost.

          47. Examination of traffic accident statistics reveals that traffic accidents are
frequently the result of violations of traffic laws - and usually the violations are the
result of illegal and dangerous driving behaviour rather than the result of
mechanical defects or poor road conditions.
