                 SENTENCE COMPLETION TEST

                                                100 QUESTIONS
                                                  90 MINUTES

Each sentence below has one or two blanks, each blank indicating that something has
been omitted. Beneath the sentence, there are five lettered words or sets of words.
Choose the word/set of words that best fits the meaning of the sentence as a whole.

                                                                                Sample Answer
               Example:
                                                                                a b c d
Although its publicity had been ________ the film itself
is intelligent, well-acted, handsomely produced and
               altogether, ____

               (a) tasteless ... respectable.
               (b) extensive ....... moderate.
               ( c) sophisticated ...... amateur.
               (d) risque ........ crude.
Explanation: The word although is a single word it suggests that the film’s publicity is in contrast
with the film itself. The main clause describes the film in positive and glowing
terms: “intelligent, well-acted, handsomely produced.” The film is well done,
therefore, the film’s publicity must be poorly done.

You are looking for two rods more or less opposite in meaning. The first, describing
the publicity, must be negative. The second, summing up the film as intelligent,
                             well-acted etc., must be positive.

Since crude, the second half of Choice (D) , is not positive, it is an unlikely word to
describe this “intelligent, well-acted film.” Eliminate Choice (D), Choice (A) is
                             correct.

          1. The literary artist, concerned solely with the creation 3. No punishment is too severe for such an ________
of a book or story as close to perfection as his powers crime; it is almost impossible to understand its
will permit, is generally a quiet individual, enormity.
              contemplative and ________ (A) avaricious
              (A) effuse (B) apposite
              (B) somnolent ( C) exemplary
