Exploring Basic Functions
Microsoft OneNote is a beefed-up word processing program. You can enter text and graphics to gather, organize, search, and share literally anything you can think of, such as meeting notes, ideas, references, instructions, and brainstorms. Unlike word processors, however, OneNote lets you input free-form sketches, add unbound text, insert screen captures, and record audio and video directly into any section of the application’s page. It’s a great way for storing digital sticky notes so you can have a clutter-free desktop.
Introduction to Microsoft OneNote
Think back to a time when you had a spiral-bound notebook. It had sections, and the sections had pages. You organized your stuff by writing on a page that belonged to a particular section. OneNote is like that, but much better, handier, and smarter. If you put information on a page in OneNote, and decide later that the information belongs in a different section, you don’t have to start from scratch and rewrite anything. A few mouse clicks do the trick.
Try adding audio and video in your spiral bound notebook. You can’t. With OneNote, you can. Now, ask three people to take notes together with you on the same page at the same with your spiral-bound notebook. You can’t. With OneNote, it’s no problem. You can even see each other’s edits in real time.
In OneNote, you also have sections and pages (see Figure 14-1). In Office 365, you can have more than one OneNote notebook.
A great example of how to use OneNote at work is for tracking projects. With a project notebook, you can have a single document to capture project information, such as background, meeting notes, team contacts, and task lists.
One of our favorite features in OneNote is the search capability. Using the search box, you can quickly find content based on keywords, jump to a page based on text within the pictures, and even find your handwritten notes!
Recently it has become apparent, however, that OneNote is a very valuable tool in the education sector in helping deliver best learning outcomes. In fact, Microsoft reported in January of 2018 that 15 million notebooks have been created since the beginning of the school year since the launch of OneNote Class Notebook, an app that helps teachers set up OneNote for their classes.
