The paintings were of horses and racing scenes,” she said. During the July Hastings Art Show, Dean had a variety of her paintings displayed. “I’m just starting to show my work now,” she said modestly.
Growing up on a farm amongst horses and animals does help to create a horseman and Kathy Dean is a horseman.
She was born in Vernon, B.C. and raised on the family farm in Falkland, B.C. This is where her love of horses began to blossom. “I actually began riding when I was 3 years-old. I chased wild horses when I was a young child,” said Dean.
Some of her clients commission paintings by send- ing her a photo and the size they would like their painting. “Most people are interested in farm scenes and old barns. I like those, but I also paint on plates and I like that because of the ne detail,” she said. “Anyone can send me a photo, it’s that easy.”
Like most young girls around horses, Dean grew up sketching horses and displaying her works proudly in her bedroom. Many of her drawings would also don the bedroom walls of her classmates. “I just visualize a horse or a

Her love of horses is what eventually led her to thor- oughbred racing. “I’ve
been training and racing thoroughbreds for 27 years now and I still enjoy it,” she declared.
Dean maintains a stable mainly in the Interior circuit but occasionally travels to Hastings Racecourse with a couple of charges to run.
She has also found time to pursue her passion of paint- ing and creates oil paintings of horses and farm scenes and anything that captures her interest. “I’ve been painting for quite some time now, nearly 20 years, but it’s only been the last couple of years that I began to sell my work,” she said.
Dean’s creations on canvas are nely detailed and show dramatic mo- ments. Her work is well supported as she has sold more than 100 paintings in the past couple of years. “I painted nine, four foot by four foot panels, for the Kin Park Racetrack in Vernon.

William attributes his knowledge and success
to his father “ I’ve been around horses a long time, but, I have to thank my father for teaching me and bringing me up the right way, he’s the reason why I know what I know.” Armata says.
