Puntrooskie, claimed May 27, 2016 and Strut N Stomp, claimed June 10 were both $40,000 claims and both won Allowance races off the claim followed by Stakes scores in their next starts. Puntrooskie won the G3 Bold Venture Stakes and was second in the Ontario Jockey Club Stakes and Strut N Stomp won the Halton Stakes.
Today the partnership continues to race and to date has had 22 wins, 28 seconds and 18 thirds with earnings of more than $800,000. With 9 horses in the partnership this year they have enjoyed 5 wins, 5 seconds and 3 thirds in 20 starts this season.
Loughry has also branched out with another partnership with Jim and Graeme Bruce this year and recommends partnering with someone with experience before owning horses on your own.
Including the partnership with Loughry, Lay now has an interest in 10 horses and recently claimed Big Mamba with trainer MacRae’s D-Mac Racing Stable, “It is important to get involved with a trainer you trust.” noted Lay, “Don is hard working and honest and he does what is right for the horse.”
Both Loughry and Lay enjoy coming to the barns
at Woodbine in the mornings to visit with their horses and chat with the team often bringing their families to share in the experience. “It is fun and something I like to do outside of work.” Added Lay, mentioning also that the two partners love to talk horseracing, “It is a data rich industry with pedigrees, stats and charts and I enjoy that side of it too.
“You have to treat owning horses as fun because there are disappointments and frustrations along
the way. You have to enjoy the wins and celebrate the successes when they happen. We’ve had
some really great success along with our share of challenges too.”
