David Garcia’s new Mexico In Town
Jockey David Garcia had made a living as a jockey for 25 years however on Canada Day 2016 his livelihood came to a halt in a gate accident that ended his career.
Born in Mexico, David came to the United States in 1999, riding at racetracks across the northern States until settling to ride solely at Mountaineer in West Virginia in 1999. By 2001 he had gained a foothold at the track hustling 701 mounts that year and winning 73 that year.
David and his family moved to Canada in 2006 where he joined the Woodbine Jockey colony late in the season securing 15 mounts before the end of the meet and also riding Quarter Horses at Ajax Downs.
The following year he rose at both at Woodbine and Fort Erie Race Tracks David riding 200 horses, 15 of which to victory and 48 Quarter Horse mounts at Ajax with 7 visits to the winners circle. In 2008 David more than tripled his workload achieving a career high 86 wins, 79 seconds and 66 thirds with 678 mounts and earnings of more than $1.4 million at both Ontario Thoroughbred tracks.
Continuing to navigate and earn a living among the competitive jockey colony in Ontario, the next few years he averaged 300 plus mounts a year. Coming off a good year in 2015 it was his 75th ride of 2016, when his horse ipped in the gate at Woodbine trapping David and crushing his right leg from the knee down. While the doctors tried to put the pieces back together the best they could the prognosis was that David would never ride a horse again.
David suddenly needed to nd a way to support his wife Araceli and their four children.
Returning to their native roots, David and Araceli have recently opened their own restaurant, Mexico In Town, located in Brampton on Steeles at Torbram, about 10 minutes from Woodbine Racetrack.
Offering authentic, fresh Mexican cuisine, the casual eat-in or take-out restaurant has received terri c reviews with their best sellers being their signature Burrito and the Burrito Bowls. Other menu items include fresh Quesadillas, Nachos and authentic Mexican tacos.
Both David and Araceli work the grill and counter from 11:00 am to 7:30 pm everyday.
“Every day is better and better,” smiled David, “And it would be great to see people come by from the track.”
