Chatting with Fort Erie Race Caller Frank Salive
The 2019 Prince of Wales Stakes was Frank Salive’s 200th live national sports broadcast of his career, one that spans decades and includes broadcast roles on both radio and television and race calling at harness tracks in Ontario and Florida.
According to news articles Larry was known as the Velvet Fog, with most of the 150,000 harness races he has called happening at Woodbine Entertainment Group and Western Fair Raceway in London. Larry spent his winter months in Florida and is good friends with Gulfstream Park’s talented announcer Peter Aiello.
Accepting the position at Fort Erie Race Track in 2016 saw the end of his living in Trinidad & Tobago, the place he had retired to two years earlier. And today
in his fourth year at the border oval Larry likens the experience of calling Thoroughbred races as doing a sports play by play with a new eld of players every twenty- ve minutes. “You need good eyesight and memory function.” smiled the personable 64 year old who still remains up for the challenge. “There is a high level of accountability these days with technology and replays. You need to get it (the calls) right or as right as possible.”
Frank was also quoted a few years ago saying, “The summer settings of tracks like Clinton and Fort Erie are so scenic and beautiful and I’ll be savouring every moment of the experience for however many years I have remaining.”
