Shirley Gill Passes Away

Wally Wood passes away
Wood joined Daily Racing Form’s Toronto of ce in 1968 and covered Ontario’s Woodbine, Fort Erie, and Greenwood racetracks plus other major Canadian racing news.
The Game
Long time Canadian Thoroughbred Magazine Sales Representative and all round horse racing lover, Shirley Gill, passed away on March 17 in Newmarket after a brief illness.
Wally Wood, a longtime writer and columnist for Daily Racing Form, died in Toronto’s Bridgepoint Hospital on March 8 at age 76.

So much more could be said about the wonderful person that Shirley was, however she had requested no obituaries.
He also was a frequent contributor to The Thoroughbred Digest and Canadian Thoroughbred, as well as other periodicals in Canada, the United States, and Europe. In addition, Wood hosted annual racing tours to international locales including the United Kingdom, mainland Europe, and the Far East.

Trainer Gordon Cowie died suddenly on February 26 at age 43.
Cowie, who trained horses for several years on the Ontario circuit, mainly at Fort Erie.
Born in Portland, Ore., but raised in Nottingham, England, Wood served in the British Army before moving to Canada and attending Montreal’s McGill University in the 1950s. - Information from DRF, Bill Tallon
He won 35 career races at Woodbine, including two in 2008.
Cowie won four added-money events at the Toronto oval in the mid 1990s, including the 1993 Shepperton with D’Or Ruckus and the 1994 Vigil with Berry Moonolow.
New Triactor and Superfecta Wagering Directives
Last year, he won The Game Cup, a $25,000 event, with two-year-old Lone Endeavor.
Over his entire training career, which began in 1992, Cowie won 98 races from 633 starts.
The Board of the Ontario Racing Commission has approved new directives dealing with triactor and superfecta wagering, reducing the number of betting interests required for the featured bet types to be permitted.
Cowie is survived by loving  ancé and best friend Ashley Palmer, Cherished son of Elizabeth and Don Page and brother of Tom (Kim) Cowie.
He is also survived by his extended family and friends in Nova Scotia, predeceased by Grandparents George and Bridgette Turnbull.
For triactor wagering, the required number of separate betting interests has been reduced from six to  ve. For superfecta wagering the required number of separate betting interests has been reduced from eight to seven for all races other than stakes races. No change was made to the number required for stakes races, as the required number remains seven.
If so desired, donations to the S.P.C.A. would be appreciated by the family.
