New Family Area and Backstretch Tours at Woodbine
Woodbine Entertainment Group announced a new family picnic area which is currently being constructed in the grass area west of the clubhouse turn of the main track.
The project which is sponsor titled, the System Equine Family Area, is geared to allow children to be actively engaged in a day at the track, and will include entertain- ing, interactive and educational displays.
The System Equine Family Area will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. every weekend and holidays during the months of July, August and Labour Day weekend in September.
Woodbine Entertainment Group is also introducing regular public tours of the Woodbine backstretch which will be dis- patching from the Family Area between noon and 4 pm.
The System Equine Family Area and backstretch tours are being implemented to introduce the public to the behind the scenes of thoroughbred racing and encour- age future customers and goodwill towards the industry.
Woodbine Changes Back to Old Ways
Woodbine Entertainment Group says that they will continue to use the infield winners circle for all stakes events at Woodbine after there was an outcry from horsepeople when WEG initially announced that the victory walk to the infield would be allowed only for those events worth $500,000 or more. All stakes winners (scheduled and overnight) will continue to have their photos taken and trophies presented in the infield.
WEG also mentioned that the champagne reception in the Turf Club will also continue and that the winning connections and all participants of Scheduled Stakes are once again invited to enjoy a glass of complimentary champagne.
Other backstretch notes:
Manure Contamination:
WEG once again reminds all backstretch workers to be mindful of contamination of the straw and shavings bins. Contaminants such as glass, string, coffee cups, horseshoes and all other trash materials must be appropriately disposed of in the blue trash bins. If contamination continues, it will violate the current removal contract and your removal costs could triple.
Main Track Starting Gate Access:
Effective immediately, the west end tunnel, harrow yard and the inside harness track are off limits to all non WEG vehicles. For access to the main track starting gate during morning training hours you are asked to park in rows 8 or 9 of the employee parking lot at the east end of the grandstand and walk across the turf course. Your Woodbine backstretch sticker will allow you access to the employee parking lot from 8:15 am to 10 am. You can reach the turf by the white wood- en stairs and platform located in the area of the turf 1/4 pole.
Unauthorized vehicles on the harness track will be fined.
Draw Dates at Woodbine:
Sunday for Wednesday; Tuesday for Thursday; Wednesday for Friday; Thursday for Saturday; Friday for Sunday; Saturday for Monday.
New Starting Gate Hours for Training Track:
The starting gate hours have been extended on the training track every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday up to June 25. The new extended hours are from 7am to 10am with a harrowing break at the regular time.
Trainers are asked to advise gate crew if the horse is breaking or schooling as breakers will receive preference over schoolers at both the training track and main track starting
gates.
There will also be a designated session for standing and
schooling horses ONLY at the training track gate on Mondays until June 20. The hours are from 8:30 - 10:00 am.
There is no gate available on either track on Tuesdays.
Turf Training and Main Track Training Hours:
The turf track is open for training (weather permitting) Wednesdays 10:00 - 10:30am (the main track closes at 9:45 am) Fridays 9:30 - 10:00 am and Sunday 9:15 - 10:00 am. The dirt track will close 15 minutes before turf training sessions on Friday and Sunday and will re-open as soon as the Turf course is closed.
Trainers are asked to obtain their turf slips the day BEFORE turf training and should observe the turf training rules posted in the Race Office.

ORC Chair Lynda Tanaka honoured by ARCI
On Friday, April 22 at its annual convention, the Association of Racing Commissioners International presented Ontario Racing Commission Chair Lynda Tanaka with the Joan F. Pew Award.
Since 1988 the annual award has been presented to a racing commissioner who had made a signif- icant impact through their leadership on the local, regional and/or national racing scenes and shows an enduring commitment to integrity in racing.
