Jockeys Martin Ramirez and Steve Bahen both reached the 1000th win milestone at Woodbine within a day of one another.
On Thursday May 5 Martin Ramirez’s win aboard the Frank Huarte owned and trained Spanish Petition was not only his first win of the 2005 season it was also his 1000th career win.
Martin is a native of Tijuana, Mexico, and has competed mainly at Fort Erie during his Canadian riding career however he has moved his tack to Woodbine for the 2005 season.
"It feels great to get this (milestone)," said Ramirez, "The pressure is off. It took a little time, but it was worth the wait.”
Ramirez earned his 1,000th win in his 26th mount of the current Woodbine meet and 6,983rd career ride overall.
Jockey Steve Bahen collected his 1,000th lifetime win aboard Queen's Plate hopeful Dave
The Knave, trained by Robert Tiller, in Woodbine's second race on Friday May 6.
"It's a nice thing to reach," said Bahen, "I have a lot of people to thank for their support over the years. I really wasn't thinking about it too much though. I knew it would come sooner or later."
"One thousand is great, but I would like to put together a solid year," said Bahen. "I started the year needing two for the milestone, but I'd like to get some more before the season ends."
Bahen, in his 20th year, won his first race in 1986 aboard Micheline at Woodbine. He has 51 career stakes wins, including seven added- money triumphs in 2004. He was the rider aboard long-shot Queen’s Plate winner T.J.’s Lucky Moon in 2002.
Bahen earned his 1,000th win on his 9,861st mount.
