hampion jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson, the rst female
he Canadian-bred 2007 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare
jockey to ride a Queen’s Plate winner (Mike Fox), has become the rst North American female rider to be granted a license to compete in Hong Kong.
Sprint winner, Mary eld, was the recipient of the inaugural Eclipse Award for Female Sprinter for 2007. (see the January issue of The Game for the story on her Cana- dian connections and her rise to fame).
Wilson left for Hong Kong on January 29 to arrive in time for her rst mount at Sha Tin Racecourse February 2.
Other Canadian connections were well represented at this year’s Eclipse Awards:
The Milton, Ontario, resident is certainly no stranger to the Hong Kong racing scene. In December, Wilson was the rst female rider to take part in the Cathay Paci c Interna- tional Jockeys’ Championship at Happy Valley Racecourse.
Horse of the Year and Three-Year-Old Male, Curlin, as well as Turf Male, English Channel, are by Canadian-bred stallion Smart Strike. Older Male, Lawyer Ron, is by Cana- dian-bred stallion, Langfuhr. Older Female, Ginger Punch is by Canadian-bred stallion Awesome Again, and was bred by Canadian Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs, who was also given the Eclipse for Outstanding Breeder in 2007.
In 2006, Wilson, along with Hayley Turner, became the rst female jockeys to participate in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup at Ascot in England.
The two-time Sovereign Award winner as Canada’s top apprentice (2005, 2006) and the Eclipse Award winner as North America’s top apprentice (2005) will be back for the start of the 2008 Woodbine Thoroughbred campaign, April 5. - Information courtesy of WEG Media Relations
