Yearling Sales Up and Down across Canada
Ontario:
The CTHS Ontario Division Yearling Select Sale held on September 5, 2006 in Toronto experienced increases in all areas and was deemed to be a success.
The number of yearlings sold (163) was up over 2005 (151) which helped to boost the gross sales to $7,072,500, up 19% over 2005 ($5,898,500) along with the average price paid per yearling increasing 11% to $43,390 from $39,063 in 2005. RNA’s also showed improvement with 25% compared to 22.75% in 2005.
Winsong Farms purchased the sale topper for $250,000 early in the session. Woodlands (Gail Wood) Agent, consigned the chestnut Hold That Tiger colt out of the Forty Niner mare Britttan Lee. Richard Moylan, Agent, sold the highest-priced filly, a daughter of Broken Vow out of the Vice Regent mare Regent’s Fancy, selling for $160,000 to Hugh Graham, Agent for Morgan Firestone.
Other highlights of the sale included a Whiskey Wisdom filly being sold at the start of the Sale for $4,000 to Michael DePaulo by consignor Woodlands (Gail Wood), Agent with the proceeds going to the LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society.
The following Saturday afternoon, the CTHS Ontario Division held the Preferred Session of their Yearling Sale which in stark contract to the Select experienced poor attendance which likely explains why the numbers were down from 2005. Only 138 of the 210 yearlings being offered were sold, down from 154 sold in 2005. The gross was down 19% to $1,215,800 from
Manitoba:
The CTHS Manitoba Division hosted their Yearling Sale on September 5 at the Assiniboia Downs Grandstand in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
With 23 more yearlings being offered this year the gross sales were up 25% with a total of 33 out of 65 yearlings selling for a gross of $141,600 over 29 selling for $107,600 in 2005. The average was up 14% to $4290 from $3710 the previous year.
The sale topper was Hip No. 67, a filly by Evansville Slew - Toned Up, by Herat who is a half sister to stakes winner Built Up (colt by Homebuilder), purchased for $20,000 by Hillside Farms, Bell, Crockett, Arnason Farms & Warner from Cam Ziprick, Agent.
Another highlight of the sale was Hip No. 56, a gelding by Perfect Vision - Replenish, by Fappiano who is a half broth- er to stakes winning filly Cindy Embers (Incinderator) who sold for $14,500 to TG Stable from Consignor Ed Pawluk.
Alberta:
The CTHS Alberta Division Summer Yearling Sale was held at the Northlands Sportex in Edmonton on August 29, 2006 and saw increases over last year’s sale despite selling 9 less yearlings than in 2005.
Of the 119 yearlings sold, the total gross was up 20% to $1,326,000 from $1,103,500 in 2005 with the average price up 29% from 8,621 in 2005 to $11,143 in 2006.
The sale topper was a Regal remark colt, Hip No. 108 sold by Horizon Farms Ltd. Agent for $60,000 to Donver Stable. The
Atten Hut, a stakes winner of more than $163,784.
The CTHS Alberta Division Fall Mixed Sale is scheduled for Saturday, October 14 at 6pm at the Sportex in Edmonton. The sale features a total of 131 horses up for offer; mares, yearlings, weanlings and Horses of Racing Age. To obtain at catalogue call the CTHS Alberta at 403- 229-3609.
British Columbia:
The CTHS British Columbia Division was hoping for a strong sale however despite some bright spots and a new record sales topper, the overall numbers were down over 2005.
The Yearling and Mixed Sale was held on Tuesday, September 12 at the Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, BC.
A total of twenty fewer horses were sold
compared to 2005 which likely contributed to the gross being down 16% to $1,589,350 from $1,872,000 in 2005. The average was down slightly (3%) from $11,848, in 2005 to $11,517 this year.
The leading consignor of the sale was Brian Leight, Agent for Orange Blossom Farm who sold the sale topper to leading buyer, Nick and Pauline Felicella who purchased Hip No. 78, a colt by In Excess (Ire) - Ashwood Tie for a record $120,000. Brian Leight, Agent for Orange Blossom also sold Hip No. 20, a colt by the same sire out of the mare Shagoff, for $90,000 to purchaser Jeff Sengara.
The Felicella’s also paid top dollar, $91,000, for Hip No. 112, an Alfaari gelding who is a half brother to their multiple stakes winner, Spaghetti Mouse (Archers Bay - Desert Mouse, by With Approval) from consignor Brian Kozak, Agent for Black Canyon Thoroughbreds.
$1,494,00 in 2005 and the average was down 10% to $8,810 from $9,701 in 2005.
The Preferred Sale topper was early on in the sale, Hip No. 282, Executive Redhead, a filly by Bold Executive - Costa Brava, sold by Gardiner Farms Limited to Bill Farish for $55,000. Eight other yearlings sold between $35,000 and $42,000.
This year’s Yearlings Sales were also broadcast for the first time over the internet. In partnership with Streamlogics, a live webcast of the sale was available in both video and audio formats and bids could be taken via telephone through the CTHS office.
