Canadian Horse Racing Celebrates 250 years
On July 1, 1767, exactly 100 years before our country’s confederation,
a race took place on The Plains of Abraham in Quebec City. From that day forward horse racing has been part of the fabric of our country.
The Canadian Horse Racing Hall of
Fame is partnering with the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society, and
Standardbred Canada to create a
series of celebrations for the 250th Anniversary of Horse Racing In Canada throughout 2017.
They have launched the ‘250 miles for 250 years’ initiative and funding campaign.
Racetracks, training centres, agricultural societies, communities, farms and fans are invited to take part in honouring Canada’s racing history by hosting a commemorative mile.
Miles in honour of the 250th Anniversary could include: a 250th Anniversary race day highlighting
the racetrack and the community’s racing history, Post parades or exhibition races using antique race bikes and buggies and equipment; a community parade with a oat or entry that represents local horse racing history. The miles of the parade can count as commemorative miles.
Other ideas include hosting an open house at a
training centre or farm & a display memorabilia and trophies representing local accomplishments and history.
Industry participants can contact local agricultural societies about participating at their fair or festival to help showcase the role horse racing has played in their community.
Tell them how you plan to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of Horse Racing
in Canada and they’ll publicize your event on the 250th Anniversary pages of the CHRHF website, as well as the special 250th Anniversary social media feeds using #cdnhorseracing250.
