Spring Training at Assiniboia Downs
Spring training at Assiniboia Downs has begun as horses prepare for the return of live Thoroughbred Racing at the Manitoba track. The 2017 meet begins Sunday, May 14 and will run through to Sunday, September 10.
The feature race at Assiniboia Downs, the Manitoba Derby, will be held on Monday, August 7, 2017. Racing
is Wednesday, Friday & Saturday at 7:30pm rst race post time with some Sunday and Monday race dates with a 1:30pm rst race post time.

Assiniboia Downs’ leading trainer by earnings
in 2016 ($282,088), Shelley Brown, moving in to Assiniboia Downs after wintering in Florida. Training since 2009, the multiple Stakes Winning trainer has been one of the top trainers at ASD for the majority of her career. Her best years to date at the track were in 2012 and 2013 when she won 48 and 41 races respectively with close to $475,000 in purse earnings each of those years.
Her top trainees include multiple Stakes winner, Golden Stripe, who last raced in 2013 for Philip Kives’ K5 Stable (Philip Kives passed away April 27, 2016) and Jim and Susan Hill’s mare Can’t
Use Nellie who nished off 2016 by winning the Manitoba Matron Stakes in September at Assiniboia Downs before shipping to Northlands to win the Duchess of York Handicap in October (a race she had won the previous year in 2015).
