The 2008 Canadian-Bred Selected Yearling Sale concluded its one-day session September 4, with a total of
149 yearlings selling for a gross of $5,830,500 and an average of $39,131, down 2.38 percent from last year’s average of $40,088, while buy backs were up 10 percent over last year’s total.
The top buyer for this year’s Selected Session was Danny Dion’s Bear Stables of Alberta, who purchased seven yearlings for a total of $687,000. Dion’s main trainer Reade Baker said he was pleased with the purchases. “We think we bought the cream of the crop,” said Baker, who is based at Woodbine. “We paid in the range of what we thought we would have to.”
winning Tethra mare Cosa Rara, topped the Preferred Session, being bought by local trainer Scott Fairlie for $60,000 from the consignment of Gardiner Farms Limited, Agent. While the top selling lly of Saturday’s session was a dark bay daughter of Grade 2 winner Kafwain, and is out of the With Approval mare Castle Mey. The yearling sold for $35,000 to Mike Lightner, Agent for Mary Surrency, and was consigned by Richard G. Hogan, Agent.
According to Ryan Mahan, lead auctioneer of Ryan Mahan & Associates of Kentucky, this year’s Sale focused speci cally on the quality horses and seemed to mirror the current Thoroughbred market.
A yearling by Storm Cat’s classic Irish winning son Black Minnaloushe topped the British Columbia CTHS Yearling and Mixed Sale held September 9, bringing a winning bid of $57,000 from agent Glenn Todd, the sale’s second leading buyer.
“This Sale was consistent with the results from most sales held this past year,” said Mahan. “While there was a struggle in the lower range, the upper range always seems to take care of itself. There obviously was a good market for quality horses.”
The sale-topper was from the leading consignment of agent Roxanne Sargent, who sold 10 lots for a total of $224,254 during the afternoon for an average of $22,424.
