Yearling Sales bring Anticipation of a good Year
The upcoming yearling sales across Canada provide an air of excitement as potential super stars are about to be paraded and sold Nation wide.
The Alberta CTHS Summer Yearling Sale is the first sale hosted in Canada and is scheduled for Saturday, August 20 and Sunday, August 21 at 6:30pm.
This year’s sale offers 200 yearlings with a good mix of Alberta, Canadian and US sires. Eighteen of the sires in the catalogue have earned more than $1 million during their racing careers and they represent 24 of the yearlings.

The Manitoba CTHS Yearling Sale is scheduled for Tuesday, September 6 and with the strong representation of Manitoba breds in this year’s Queen’s Plate at Woodbine, they are hoping for a good turn-out of buyers.
There are 45 hip numbers in this year’s sale with the Manitoba sire, Circulating, making up the majority share with 9 yearlings in the catalogue.
Manitoba sires Act Smart and Gold Hat each have 5 yearlings. Outside sires in the catalogue include Bold n’ Flashy, Classy Prospector, Evansville Slew and more.
There are 3 yearlings in the sale from the same breeding connections as Queen’s Plate runner, Get Down. While the mare Pair of Jeans and her Classy Prospector yearling are being offered by Ed Pawluk, the breeder of Fancy As. Ed also has an Ontario bred yearling by Perfect Vision out of his Stakes producing mare, Dancing Lady Luck.
Consignor Cam Ziprick Thoroughbreds represents the largest number of yearlings with 5 of his own and two as agent for other owners.
His offerings include a filly by Circulating out of his local stakes winning mare, Makaraina Miss as well as a gelding by Circulating out of the mare Canadian Danzig, who is a 1/2 brother to Your Excellence, a multiple stakes winner at age 2; and a gelding by Jambalaya Jazz out of the mare Marcy Jo Anne, who is a 1/2 sister to Manitoba bred Slinky Lady who ran in the Kentucky Oaks.
Consignor Gary Wilkinson is offering a filly by Boanerges out of the mare Jessie’s Shadow. The filly is a 1/2 sister to Coal Smudge who is a five time stakes winner and 2003 HBPA Horse of the Year.
George Friesen is selling the 1/2 brother to Stakes winner, Speedy Treat, a colt by Act Smart out of the Stakes winning mare, Tahiti Treat.

The CTHS of Ontario is once again hosting the yearling sale in Ontario which is scheduled for Tuesday, September 6 for the Selected portion of the sale which features 216 yearlings, along with the Preferred portion of the sale with 227 yearlings being offered on September 9 and 10.
The Select Sale features plenty of local sires including; A Fleets Dancer, Ascot Knight, Bold Executive, Bold n’ Flashy, Cat’s At Home, Compadre, Foxtrail, One Way Love, Perigee Moon, Porto Foricos, and Trajectory to name a few. US Stallions are also represented in the sale and include; Langfuhr, Running Stag, Vicar, Our Emblem,
Distorted Humor, Graeme Hall, Smart Strike, Peaks and Valleys, Silver Charm, and Tiznow etc.
A good variety of yearlings are available at this year’s sale including:
Michael Byrne, Agent for Park Stud - Hip No. 109 Select colt by Perigee Moon out of the mare Katebyrne - 1/2 brother to Ruby Park (Bold Ruckus) stakes winner and graded placed winner of $286,984. The full brother was purchased as a select yearling in 2004 by Agent Anthony Goswell for $30,000.

The 2004 CTHS Yearling Sales topper, a Skywalker colt out of Love a Ruckus ($285,000). Sold by Susan Y. Foreman. "When I buy a horse I am always looking for a Queen's Plate-type. This is a nice individual. He is a good mover and we have high hopes for him," trainer Roger Attfield.
