New Jockey at Fort Erie
Eduardo Manalad
By Harlan Abbey
Another globe-trotter, this one of the two-legged variety, is Edgardo "Eddie" Manalad, the first jockey from the Philippines to ride in North America.
"I gambled at the racetrack in Manila," he said, "and I'd shout to a jockey that lost my bet 'When I get big,
I can do better than you.' After being a hot walker and groom and exercise rider I entered the two-year apprentice academy there directed by former American jockey George Stribling. I was one of its first graduates."
In the Philippines, Manalad related, they race five days a week, 16 races per day and the average field has 14 horses. Racing is also held on Wednesday nights, ten races per program. But the jockey's share of a winning $15,000 purse was only about $200 at the time. The adventuresome rider did well in his home country, but later went on to polish his riding style in Saudi Arabia and Japan for a few years, then came to Canada. After finding rides hard to come by at Woodbine, Manalad moved his tack to Fort Erie this year, and quickly experienced "the ecstasy and agony" of sports competition.
"I won my first race here on May 14," he said, "and the next day the horse I was riding threw a fit in the post parade and threw me off. I fractured my leg, but it was a mild fracture, I was only out a month. That trainer, and his maniac of a horse, went back to West Virginia. I wouldn't have ridden the horse again."
