Did You Know....
That Jockey Garry Cruise has been granted a ORC jockey’s license and began his comeback at Woodbine on July 24.
As reported in the Daily Racing Form, Cruise, who had changed his name from Colin Campbell, was suspended indefinitely by the Ontario Racing Commission Stewards in August 1998 for falsifying his riding record on his apprentice jockey’s application. A day earlier he had been apprehended by Fort Erie OPP and Citizenship and Immigration Officials and was deported back to his native Scotland on a matter in California. Agent Fred Scott will once again represent the jockey at Woodbine.
Did You Know.....
That Trainer Elliott Walden has decided to end his training career to take the position as WinStar Farm’s vice president in charge of racing and bloodstock services.
Walden had been the semi-private trainer for WinStar for the past three years of his 21 years of training. He enjoyed his most successful year as a trainer in 1999 with runners such as Menifee, Victory Gallop, Ecton Park, Plenty of Light, Brahms and Awesome Humor helped to pad his earnings to over $7.2 million.

That ticket applications for this year’s Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships were available and being accepted in July in preparation for the October 29 event which is hosted by Belmont Park in 2005. One of her responsibilities was to walk Perfect Soul, with Paul O’Sullivan aboard, out to the racetrack every day and it was during that time that Melanie and Paul started a relationship which has since blossomed into a matrimonial bond, with the couple expected to be married in October.
In the winter of 2003 Melanie worked for trainer Claude “Shug” McGaughey at Payson Park and also galloped at Keeneland in Kentucky.
Both Paul and Melanie currently gallop horses for trainer Mike Keogh at Woodbine as well as run the farm.
Eric MacDonald, is an Engineer and the CEO of his successful company MacViro, a multi-discipline engineering firm based in Markham. But more importantly, he is Melanie’s father and has always held the dream of one day owning a thoroughbred horse farm.
Born in Scotland, Eric has been a fan of racing all of his life and has fre- quented Ascot, the Kentucky Derby, the Travers and numerous Breeders Cup races throughout the years. He is currently a proud partner in two racehorses who compete at both Woodbine and Fort Erie.
“For Paul and my Dad, this was a dream that was meant to be.” said Melanie, “Dad knew Paul had the experience needed. It is a dream come true.”
