The Sam-Son Farm owned, Lotus Land, enjoys being cooled off after winning the fifth race at Woodbine on July 23. There have been record breaking temperatures throughout the months of June and July in Southern Ontario and keeping the horses cool has been a number one priority with a hose available in the winner’s enclosure as well as two other locations on route back to the backstretch.

"Hi Chaplain, thanks for coming down, you didn't have to do this, thanks for coming down, here's my number- next time call first, you didn't have to do this."
"It's OK Jerry, I don't mind coming to the hospital- how are you doing?"
"I'm tired- I'll just stay here long enough to get well again. I've been fighting this for ten years now. Next time call first- you didn't have to do this."
"No problem J.C. Are you sleeping OK? Do you need anything?"
"Nothing, nothing. I'm in the Hall of Fame, you know."
"Yeah, I know that - deservedly so."
"I stumbled in here, but I want to walk out - next time call first. I just want a few radiation treatments, and then I'll be alright. I've been fighting this for ten years, you know"
"I know J.C. When do you think you'll be out?"
"Just a few treatments - I want to walk out of here. I stumbled in, but I want to walk out of here. I'm in the Hall of

Lives Present
I remember staring into the incubator at the tiny helpless life that lay before me. She was taped down so she wouldn't pull at the tubes and wires that were her only means of support, her only hope for life. I had married the parents as Chaplain at Assiniboia Downs and rejoiced with them when they
shared the news of their daughter's impending birth. I knew them both for several years and walked several miles with them on their journey through life. What was to be their greatest joy, now appeared to be their greatest struggle.
When Jesus was in the garden of Gethsemane, scripture states that Christ prayed so hard that He was in pain and the sweat fell from His brow to the ground like drops of blood. I now know how He felt as I placed my hands on the glass of the incubator and prayed for God to intervene and spare the life of His creation. I don't know how long I prayed but I do know that when I left the hospital, I felt exhausted and was soaked with sweat. I left the hospital telling the parents that God wouldn't take the time to create their baby and not give up without a fight.

Lives Future
There are several couples expecting babies at Woodbine - I know of at least three. As a father of two, there is nothing quite like children. In fact, I keep telling them the first nine months is easy, it's the next eighteen or so years that will wear you out!
John and Joanne Mattine are two of the parents-to-be. Their enthusiasm is encouraging, a refreshing break in light of the number of funerals this year. They've seen their first of many sonograms and even though Joanne has been morning-sick- ness free, she has hung up her helmet for the year. Of
course, John has timed this right, theirs being a winter birth, but I think the time of year would be irrelevant. (Old joke: To a horse trainer- "Do you wantaboyoragirl?""Iwanta groom!".) Other couples share about painting the baby room or ask whether I could baptize their newborn. Their faces reflect the joy and mystery of creating life that only parents can understand. I leave their barns knowing that with future parents such as these, the present is in very good shape indeed.
It's been quite a week.
