When the time came to break Paulswithdavid, Heidi took to that task as well. Unfortunately, his racing career was delayed somewhat. He was born a ridgling, and by the time he had recuperated from the operations and other complications, he was four years old. He then won a few races but was soon injured, and thus another year passed by. Upon returning to the track, Heidi took over as trainer, winning two races with him last year as well
as his rst start in 2008. Race analyst Mike Heads has called Paulswithdavid “a versatile sort and very consistent,” comments re ecting a solid horse.
Paulswithdavid broke his maiden on Mother’s Day, and the Murray clan gathered around him in the winners circle. “Paul and David’s mother, Doreen, was ecstatic,” Heidi recalls.
But it’s in the name that the true story lies. Heidi’s family is close to
a family by the last name of Murray. The Murrays had ve sons. In 1990, one of the sons, David, died of cancer. In 2001, another of the Murray boys passed away. Within days of Paul’s death, Heidi pulled a certain bay from his mother’s womb. “My husband
at the time, John, and I wanted to remember both Paul and David, and so we submitted the name Paulswithda- vid to the Jockey Club.” The Murray family is not a horse family, but
when they heard that a horse would
be running infused with the spirit of
I work with Paulswithdavid in the mornings, I notice each of the brothers in the way the horse acts. I watch him ambling toward the track, bucking and bouncing along and I think of Paul. Then suddenly he stops and just stands there like a statue for fteen minutes. Nobody or nothing can move him, and I think of David.”
Not only is the name Paulswith- david infused with warmth, but it also contains a degree of mystery. Heidi swears that the horse’s charac- ter re ects the characters of the two deceased brothers. “Paul was a lively, energetic man. He was a top-notch, internationally-ranked downhill skier. David was almost his opposite. He was the quiet, reserved type. When
What, then, is in a name? Not much, I suppose, when you’re reading it in the Form. Secretariat could have been named Green Monkey and Green Monkey Secretariat, and it wouldn’t make any difference. But a name like Paulswithdavid? Shakespeare, who entertained all sorts of mystery and magic in his plays, could perhaps make an exception in a case like this.
