Paulswithdavid: A Horse by Any Other Name Wouldn’t Be the Same
By Peter Valing
“What’s in a name?” Juliet asked
her Romeo in one of the most famous passages in the English language. Nothing, of course, she answered
in the same breath. “That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Despite the truth of this observation, we as humans are compelled to name beings and things. Horses are among the beings we name, and the names we devise for them re ect basic human inclinations.

Then one day, a track insider brie y outlined for me what he believed to be the genealogy of this

tell that at the age of fteen, all but two bones in her face were broken
as a result of an equestrian accident. “The horse threw me, and one of his hooves crashed down into my face. I was a teenager walking around with no front teeth,” she smiles. Some years later, following another accident in which more facial bones were broken, Heidi decided to stay off the horses and focus instead on training them. Paulswithdavid has been her central project ever since.
