The 79th running of the Grade III $300,000 Canadian Derby is the high- light of the month at Northlands Park. Local favourites Arkhill, winner of two major prep races, and Papa Time can expect to see challenges from Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia. Nominations close on August 13 and the number of imports deciding to make the trip will be determined by how con dent the trainers are that they can knock off the local champion in the form of Arkhill.
Typically, at least one horse from each of Woodbine, Assiniboia Downs and Hastings Park make the trek to northern Alberta and in the past entries have also come in from the northern United States . . .
