Labour of Love
Jennifer Power is always at the barn. On a regular day during the racing season you will likely find her in the barn from 4am until 6pm, doing what she loves....working with the horses.
“The best thing for me is to chill out and be with the horses.” said Jennifer in a recent interview (in the barn) at Ralph Biamonte’s Gemini Farms in Niagara Falls, ON. “I spend quality time with them and get to know them. That way I know when something is wrong.”
Jennifer was born and raised in the town of Aurora, Ontario and although she had always wanted a horse of her own, she had to settle for leasing a pony at Tyndale Pony Cub, where Joan Clark, mother and grandmother of jockeys David Clark and Cory Clark respectively, was her teacher.
Markanna, was a welsh, hackney cross which the then 16-year-old Jennifer had fallen in love with. So when
someone
threatened to buy her, she was devastated until her father came to the rescue to lend her the money to buy Markanna herself. They spent three years riding together before she died tragically after being struck by lightening.
Jennifer then purchased a 5-year- old thoroughbred, Lady Hawk (like the movie), a horse which she kept for 12 years.
It was around that time that Jennifer was introduced to the races. Working for the Humane Society she was invited to box seats at Woodbine, and after a few more visits to the track, she was hooked and wanted to learn more about thoroughbred racing.
She became a groom and over the next few years worked for trainers Gail Hughes, John Cirillo and J.C. Meyers. During the winter she galloped and broke horses as well as mucked stalls at Danny Zita’s farm.
She met Tom County Jr. and the couple then rented a farm in Mount Albert. Jennifer looked after the horses at the farm while Tom Jr. looked after the training at the racetrack. They had all sorts of horses from Drafts and paints to racing thoroughbreds offering broodmare care and foaling and breaking and legging- up.
The farm was always full of horses and after eight years, Tom moved his stable to Fort Erie, and Jennifer followed shortly after, reluctantly having to give up the farm.
Their son Brendon, who is now a horse crazy nine year old, is looking to become a jockey, “just like Chad” and is already doing some riding on a rodeo circuit.
Jennifer and Tom have since gone their separate ways and Jennifer took a position with trainer Ralph Biamonte at the beginning of the 2005 season at Fort Erie. She grooms anywhere from 5 to 9 horses a day however after all her work is done she still finds the time to allow the horses to be “spoiled a little.”
“I graze the horses everyday and give them carrots.” says Jennifer, with a glint of pride, “They get magnetic blankets, and I let them roll in the sand of the hotwalking machine.”
This winter at the farm, Jennifer is a one woman show, looking after the seventeen horses on the farm. The horses are in good hands as she makes sure they all get brushed, picked, and groomed on a regular basis. She says she doesn’t have any one favourite, she treats them all the same however she does mention 9-year-old, Fantastic Allie, who is a sweet classy mare and Brendon likes Ralph’s old Appaloosa pony, 30-year-old Gemini.
Jennifer is hoping to get her assistant trainer license in 2006 and is looking forward to getting back to racing in the spring, “I am happy when the horses win races.”
