CTHS Honours Young Horsewoman
The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society announced in November that 18 year-old Clare McCormack is this year’s recipient of the Gillian Luxton MD Scholarship Award, which includes $5000
towards McCormack’s school education.
post-secondary
McCormack is
in her first year of
Health Sciences
at McMaster
University and,
based on the
evidence, is a
deserving and
most appropriate
winner of this
scholarship.
According to the CTHS, this award is for a student who demonstrates “excellence in both education and the horse industry.”
McCormack excelled in a variety of endeavours at Monsignor Paul Dwyer High School in Oshawa. An honours student in every year, she was on student council, the cheerleading team and the swim team. She wrapped up her formative years by being named the school’s Valedictorian.
Her involvement in horses is also substantial.
“I did a lot of cross country, show jumping and dressage,” she says, “From when I was six to when I was fourteen.”
For many years, her father Bernard has worked at historic Windfields Farm.
The McCormacks own Maple Shade Farm, just north-east of Oshawa and Clare is responsible for a very important process.
“During the summer we do a lot of sales preps with the yearlings,” says Clare, “That involves walking and grooming the yearlings. My brother Connor and I do it together.”
In a stroke of harmony, combining a love for horses and her studies, McCormack swung a deal that puts new meaning to the expression ‘horses for courses.’
“I had a yearling out of All She Loves by D’wildcat,” reports McCormack on her filly, “She sold in Kentucky in September and the proceeds of that have helped to finance my first year at McMaster.”
Currently, McCormack’s studies include “a lot of anatomy, biochemistry and pharmacology. It’s very much geared towards the healthcare industry. I’m just taking a sample of everything this year.”
This year’s Gillian Luxton winner is keeping an open mind for her career choice when she leaves McMaster, but she’s certain about one thing,
“I think that horses will always be a part of my life.”
