Bettor Reaps Half $Million Bonanza
Did You Know....
That the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority is getting tough with jockeys regarding the requirement to wear helmets approved by the American Society for Testing and Materials. The Kentucky rule which has been on the rule books since 2004 has not been enforced until now. The clerk of scales will be responsible for enforcing the rule.
The most common approved helmet is the Charles Owen, while the other commonly used helmet, the Caliente Safety Helmet, is not approved.
Christmas came early for a British Columbia racing fan who, on November 24 took the entire record Pick 7 pool of $533,166.35 from the Woodbine Thoroughbred card. The unidentified bet- tor, apparently playing from the comfort of home through HoreplayerInteractive, wagered $144 and astutely selected each of seven winners from the second through the eighth races.
The Pick 7 is a popular $1 wager, that challenges fans to pick the winners of seven straight races. When nobody gets all seven, a consolation payout is distrib- uted and the rest of the pool is carried
over. By November 24, the pool had gone unclaimed for 31 straight racing days, producing a carryover of $352,808.80. That created a bit of Pick 7 frenzy as an additional $271,869 was poured into the pool.
The winning ticket included all seven winners; Suvorov ($4.40), Pangari ($9.60), Its in the Blood ($25.20), Sweetamygee ($22.70), Growling ($6.80), Getaway Candidate ($7.70) and Feistee Dear ($10.30) to seal the deal in the 8th race. The $533,166.35 is the most ever won in the Pick 7 from a thorough- bred card at Woodbine.
Fort Erie’s Sprinter of the Year, Shipman with owner Steve Chircop
Cont. from Previous Page
Actually, Shipman has done more than just pay his own way and give Steve Chircop a great start as an owner. When Shipman won that five-furlong sprint at Woodbine on August 16, the second place horse was Caribineer. Chircop figured any horse that could get within half a length of his must be pretty good, so...
“I claimed him for $4000 at Fort Erie on September 24,” says Chircop, then adds a priceless line, “So, with that win, Shipman ended up buying himself a friend - they’re stabled next door to each other.”
Seems that Caribineer caught Shipman’s winning touch – two starts after Chircop claimed him, he won an $8000 claim race.
In 2006, with possibly one start remaining, Shipman has earned over $60,000. He stepped up several rungs on November 18 when he took on $20,000 claim company in a six-furlong race.
“He got beat two and a quarter lengths,” says Chircop, “In the backstretch, it looked as if he wanted to run but he was stuck behind horses. Daniel said he had a lot of horse. In the stretch it seemed like he was running right with them, then he tailed off and he came running again at the wire.”
Chircop is grateful to his father and his uncle Joe Chircop with whom he shared his first horse. He also credits much of his horse knowledge to uncle Tino and cousin Kevin.
At the end of the day, this is probably as good a case as you’ll ever see at the track of a trainer and horse’s personalities being so much in sync that they wear out a path to the winner’s circle.
