Winston Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary
Winston Lopez
Did You Know.....
That there have been two additional track records broken on the new racing surface at Fort Erie in June. On June 11, the Stronach Stable owned Awesome Rush, with Francine Villeneuve aboard, won the 1 1/16 mile - seventh race in a final time of 1:42. The previous record was held by Monte Cristo at 1:42 1/5 in 1980. Sean Smullen is the conditioner of Awesome Rush.
Two days later, the Stronach Stable owned High Blitz, with jockey Emile Ramsammy aboard broke the record for six furlongs winning the race in 1:08 1/5 toppling Deputy Carson’s 2001 record of 1:08 4/5. Justin Nixon is the trainer of High Blitz.
There have been a total of three records beaten this season with both Speedy Comet and Jonah Magic running the same time of 54 1/5 for 4 1/2 furlongs within a day of each other in May.
Before arriving in Canada, Winston Lopez, worked as a technician in a veterinary diagnostic Laboratory where they researched rabies and other viruses in all different types of animals.
In his native Trinidad, Winston had a passion for horses which he had developed at the young age of fourteen when he visited the thoroughbreds at Queen’s Park Savannah. He had hoped to pursue a career in veterinary medicine and spent a majority of his teenage years helping in the family pharmacy, where his father was a pharmacist.
Winston was one of fourteen children which unfortunately meant veterinary college was not a financially viable option so he took the next best route and immigrating to Canada in 1967 to attend the British Columbia Institute of Technology where he earned a degree in Finance and Business Management. From there he achieved a Bachelor Degree in Economics at Simon Fraser University.
After 7 years of academics Winston then began working with the Federal Government as an income tax investigator, a position he remained in for nineteen years.
His passion for horses never waned and Winston found himself at the racetrack in the early 1980’s volunteering his time on the backstretch in the barn of the late trainer Brendan Swash. It was Mr. Swash who helped Winston learn the finer points of training thoroughbreds. It was during this time that Winston realized there were a lot of health problems with the horses.
Winston had noticed that one of the problems that many racing thoroughbreds face is bleeding, or “exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage” (EIPH).
Using his extensive research skills along with his pharmaceutical and veterinary research knowledge Winston decided that he would develop a natural nutrition and healing product specifically designed for thoroughbred racehorses and in 1995 the product Haemequine was created under Winston’s company name LMW Enterprises.
After 10 years on the market, Haemequine has been tested and proven to work as a natural aid for bleeders not only in Canada
and the United States, but also in the Caribbean, Hong Kong and Australia. Haemequine, which has now been approved by the very strict FDA Drug Enforcement Agency, is not a diuretic and it also helps reduce throat and respiratory inflammation.
LMW Enterprises is
celebrating it’s tenth year
in business and now
boasts an all-natural line
of six products each designed with the racing horse in mind.
Ondeebit, converts body fat into performance energy; Untie Muscle Ease, is baking soda free and helps to lower SGOT and CK blood counts; Acceleration Plus, interrupts the Lactic Acid cycle and helps prevent tying up; Breathe Free and Easy, helps reduce mucous caused by allergies and viruses; and Run Free and Easy is a homeopathic pain killer.
The latest launch from LMW is a Pre-Race product which is a mixture of all of the products which can be given the day of the race.
Winston has now lived in British Columbia for the past 25 years and is proud that his products, which are used world-wide, carry the Canadian Maple Leaf. Produced in British Columbia at a local factory, the LMW products, although they were designed for thoroughbreds have been very popular with standardbreds as well.
An owner and a breeder of both thoroughbreds and standardbred horses, you will find Winston racing his horses at Hastings and Fraser Downs, in British Columbia and Northlands Park in Alberta.
