Since publishing our rst issue in January 2001, we feel The Game has been as much a part of thoroughbred horseracing in Canada as the dedicated horsepeople who work tirelessly to get the horses to the races.
Both myself and Canadian Thoroughbred Publisher, Jennifer Anstey, are committed to combining the best of both publications to create an
all encompassing, exciting and newly designed magazine for the Canadian Thoroughbred Industry.
So with one door closing, so does another door open. I am looking forward to my new position with Canadian Thoroughbred and hope that you will embrace our newly combined publication with as much enthusiasm as you have shown The Game!

Longtime Woodbine trainer, Tony Mattine, died at his home on Friday, May 22 following a long struggle with cancer. He was 74.
Jockey Rene Douglas was critically injured in a spill during the Arlington Matron Handicap on May 23 at Arlington
Park. Rene was aboard the Chiefswood Stable owned and
Eric Coatrieux trained, Born to Be, who was bumped by Sky Mom and was forced out and then clipped heals with fading pacesetter Boudoir. Born to Be tumbled straight down forcing Rene to go head rst into the track the horse, who was knocked unconscious then rolled on top of the jockey and had to be pulled off of him by the gate crew.
Tony, who was born in Avellino, Italy, had worked as an assistant to the late Gord Huntley before beginning his training career at Woodbine in 1975.
Over the years he had trained 11 stakes winners, most notable was Prospective Dolly, who had a career record of 22-13-6 and earnings of more than $700,000 in 48 starts from 1989 through 1994.
Rene’s agent, Dennis Cooper was reported as saying that early diagnosis is indicating that he may never walk again. Douglas’s fth and sixth vertebrae were compressed “like two cars involved in a rear-end collision and there were fragments of bone lodged in his spinal cord. Doctors are not completely sure of the diagnosis and they are hoping that Douglas’s tness may help in his recovery.
Tony also trained Jet Freighter, a turf specialist who won Woodbine’s Connaught Cup in record time. A record that was only just eclipsed on Sunday, May 24 by the Malcolm Pierce trained and Melnyk Racing owned Sterwins. Jet Freighter was also the winner of the Seagram Cup, Jockey Club Cup, and Izvestia.
Sadly, Born to Be, who was third in the 2008 Maple Leaf Stakes at Woodbine, was also seriously injured and had to be euthanized the following day.
Other stakes winners from his barn included Highland Vixen, Dressed for Action, China Ruckus, Highland Ruckus, Quitman, Jacksboro, Flying Pocket, Friuli, and John Bright.
