LongRun Approaches Industry for Financial Stability
MakeYourVote Count
HBPA of Ontario Election
On June 27, 2006, Directors of LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society held a meeting with fifteen concerned members of the industry to discuss suggestions on how they might secure permanent long term funding.
With more than 30 retired horses currently under the care of LongRun they are finding themselves in the precarious position of running a serious deficit if permanent funding is not secured soon.
LongRun is one of the first adoption and placement programs for thoroughbred racehorses in Ontario and more than 120 retired horses have been found permanent homes since the program’s inception in 2001.
LongRun currently relies on the generosity of individual donations however while horses are waiting to find permanent residence they are placed in foster homes whose daily boarding costs ($10 to $15 per day per horse) are stretching them to the limit.
“We rely solely on fundraising and donations to keep us afloat.” said LongRun director Sue Leslie, “It’s always a guessing game from year to year how much we have. We can never budget.”
LongRun hosted it’s first annual fundraising Gala in 2005 which provided a must needed boost however the daily cost of running the program continues to mount.
LongRun stated that they aim to own their own property in the future which would eliminate the boarding fees while horses are waiting to be placed in permanent homes. However to achieve that goal they will need steady source of funding as well as donations.
During the meeting there were many great suggestions on how to raise money short-term however it was agreed that long term sta-
bility would mean that funding must come
from all areas of the industry including owners, breeders and the racetracks. Funding should be collective from all areas of the industry.
Much progress has been made since the meeting and it now looks as though there is a light at the end of the tunnel for LongRun. However they are still awaiting confirmation and final commitments from all areas of the industry.
In the meantime, Woodbine Entertainment Group, in an effort to generate short-term cash flow, designated July 15 as LongRun Day at the Races. The track allocated the money it would take in from the Dance Smartly Stakes to LongRun in the form of a donation. They
also had a draw for a mounted and framed complete jockey card collection. The HBPA donated 2000 t- shirts which were given away with a donation to LongRun. Woodbine jockeys were also on hand to sign their jockey cards for a donation to the cause. All in, the day raised more than $22,000 for LongRun.
The responsibility of looking after the horses when they retire should be everyone’s concern. The industry as a whole needs to step-up collectively to make sure that there will always be a LongRun program to provide the horses with a caring and happy retirement after the racetrack.
