LongRun Day a smash hit at Woodbine
By Chris Lomon
Woodbine jockeys, volunteers and members of LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society teamed up to make LongRun Day an overwhelming success at the Toronto oval, on July 15.
Several events, including an autograph session with members of the Woodbine riding colony highlighted the day, one which raised $23,000 for LongRun, whose adoption and placement programs help find homes for thoroughbreds in Ontario.
The afternoon offered a little bit of everything for racing fans.
Customers that donated $5 to help feed a horse for a day received a ballot for a draw to win a framed signed set of the popular 2006 Woodbine jockey collector card series.
Those who made a donation of any denomination received an HBPA t-shirt. The same applied for those who wished to take home an autographed LongRun poster signed by Woodbine's jockeys.
Woodbine Entertainment Group and the HBPA teamed together to donate a portion of the commissions from the Dance Smartly Stakes, won by Ambitious Cat, to LongRun.
As well, HPI customers received double points on the entire Woodbine card of racing (double rewards
points were available at all WEG sites).
On July 23, a cheque was presented by David Willmot, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Woodbine Entertainment Group, to LongRun, a day that celebrated the racetrack's 50th anniversary.
"The board of directors of LongRun cannot thank Woodbine and the HBPA enough for its continued support to helping the horses," said Jennifer Morrison, a director of LongRun. "We
would also like to thank the Woodbine jockeys who once again showed their dedication to our cause. We are very fortunate to have the industry's total support."
