Digital X-ray of a right hind stifle
Digital x-ray of a knee
New Technology provides Improved Diagnostics
Digital Imaging has been in use now for a little more than a year and it is providing equine veterinarians with a terrific diagnostic tool.
“The images are phenomenal.” says Dr. Brian Van Arem, who recently joined practices with Dr. Robert McMartin and Dr. Ljubmoir Slavic, “Previous x-rays would show an area as clean, the quality of what you can see now is unbelievable.”
Digital imaging x-rays can also look at areas, such as a stifle, which were previously difficult to get a good image.
“There was a horse which had x-rayed clean on his stifles and
hock however he still displayed hind end lameness.” explains Dr. Van Arem, “We did a digital x-ray and it turned out he had a fractured tibia.”
The equipment is portable and can be taken to the barns and takes approximately 12 seconds to shoot and have the image come up
on the computer screen.
“You can take the shot and show the trainer right away.” says Brian, “It provides a better diagnosis because of the quality of the image.”
Brian says that they can now x-ray areas of the horse such as the elbow, shoulder,
tibia, sinuses, and withers, places they had been restricted at seeing clearly with conventional x-rays.
The resulting x-ray images can be stored on file in the computer or transferred to disk for portability and record keeping.
