Calder’s Extreme Day of Racing Rained Out!
Calder Race Course’s ‘Extreme Day’ of Racing was washed out by rain. After many months of planning, what was gearing up to be the most memorable day of racing endured extremely disappointing conditions after heavy rains the day before the event forced changes to be made to the ‘extreme events’.
Originally the Day of Extremes was to feature:
The King George Wrong Way Stakes (1 3/8-miles to be run clockwise on the turf course)
The World’s Fastest Daily Double (a six furlong dirt race and one-mile turf race to be run simultaneously)
Methuselah Stakes (horses 5 years or older)
Rocket Man Stakes (a two-furlong event for 2-year-olds and up)
Gray Pride Stakes (grays and roans only)
Battle of the Sexes (female riders Kristi Chapman and Rosemary Homeister Jr. to square off against two male riders)
Bob Umphrey Turf Marathon Championship (two-mile turf stakes)
Due to the conditions:
The King George Wrong Way Stakes was moved to the dirt where it was run under normal counter clockwise conditions.
The Bob Umphrey Memorial Handicap was also taken off the turf.
And the World’s Fastest Daily Double was also cancelled due to the races being taken off the turf.
In the ‘Extreme Races’ that did get to run:
Rain Song was the winner of the Rocket Man Stakes.
El Segundo extended his winning streak to seven in the 5yr-old and up Methuselah Handicap.
Texas Red was the winner of the King George Wrong Way Stakes, going the right way. Slider was the winner of the Gray Pride
Stakes
and Rosemary Homeister Jr. won the Battle
of the Sexes Invitational Stakes with Boston Fox.
