Woodbine Backstretch Update
In a memo sent to the horsepeople at Woodbine at the end of the 2005 season, Woodbine Entertainment Group, in what they are calling an attempt to defray third party waste removal expense, will be revising the Environmental Surcharge on each stall at Woodbine in 2006.
The surcharge will remain at $1.00 plus GST per stall per day for all stalls at Woodbine however WEG will institute a 25% discount for each Woodbine stall where the floor is fully matted. WEG will only charge $0.75 per stall per day plus GST upon approval of compliance by the Stall Office.
To be approved for the discount the floor must be 100% covered with a minimum of standard rubber stall mats or preferably for WEG, a stall mattress product such as SoftStallTM or a comparable product.
WEG has said that properly matted floors require less bedding and the floors remain level longer, thus allowing less maintenance and less waste removal.
Trainers must obtain written approval from, Steve Koch, Director of Backstretch Operations before installation or alteration to the stalls.
New Ice Making Equipment in 2006
Woodbine Entertainment Group will be installing new ice making equipment on the backstretch which promises to improve reliability and minimize maintenance costs.
The new Ice House will be open everyday and will not require staffing. The ice may be taken for backstretch use free of charge. In turn WEG now requires that trainers must remove their private ice machines from any location where their neighbours seek to install laundry equipment and effective immediately, no
new ice machines may be installed at any barn.
Woodbine jockey agents and jockeys step up for LongRun
When it comes to helping retired thoroughbred horses, it turns out Woodbine jockey agents and jockeys are in it for the LongRun.
A majority of Woodbine jockey agents and jockeys have made donations to sponsor two of LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society's horses.
LongRun is one of the first adoption and placement programs for thoroughbred racehorses in Ontario.
The agent colony raised over $2,000 and chose the popular seven-year-old Dawn Watcher (10 wins, $495,145 in earnings), who last raced in June, to sponsor for six months.
Dawn Watcher is one of some 30 horses currently fostered by LongRun that are looking for happy homes.
"The board of directors at LongRun is so very grateful to the jockey agents and the jock-
eys who showed interest in helping this
wonderful, classy racehorse," said Jennifer
Morrison, a Director with LongRun. "It's a wonderful feeling, especially at this time of year, when horsepeople get together to help our horses who give us so much."
Veteran jockey Robert Landry, also a Director of LongRun, was extremely grateful for their support of his fellow riders, who teamed to raise over $3,000, to sponsor stakes-placed Academic.
"The jockeys stepped up and showed their support for something that is impor- tant to all of us," said Landry. "I'm very proud of everyone."
"The jockeys really stepped up to the plate," said JBAC Managing Secretary Irwin Driedger, a former champion rider. "Throughout the year, they have contributed to a variety of causes and once again, they showed their willingness to help."
It was a successful year for LongRun, whose inaugural Black and White Gala, held on September 23 at Woodbine's trackside tent, raised just over $70,000 including some $40,000 from live and silent auctions, for retired racehorses awaiting adoptive homes.
More than 300 people attended the gala, which featured performances by award winning musician Jeff Healey and his band the Jazz Wizards.

Did You Know....
That the American Association of Equine Practitioners’ Task Force on Medication has recommended a ban on the use of anabolic steroids, as well as stimulants, muscles relaxants and diuretics for horses sold at public auction. The recommendation was issued in a report from the AAEP which outlines which medications should be allowed at therapeutic levels and also calls for the sales companies to serve as the “principle enforcers” of the recommendations.
