Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
It is with a heavy heart that I sit down to write this letter.
I am one of those fellows that’s lucky enough to ride horses
every morning at Woodbine Racetrack. In that capacity I get to meet a great number of different individuals, i.e. trainers, grooms, jockeys, hot walkers, exercise riders like myself and of course the owners of these amazing creatures.
While all the horses I ride are special, some of them are far more special than others. Not because they are big stakes winners, no, but because they are happy characters that love to train in the mornings. The kind of horse that when you are galloping them around the track and they always give you that happy buck as much as to say, “This is so much fun, I love it”, and then they go out in the afternoon and try their absolute best. One of those horses that I have had the pleasure of riding for the past couple of years is one of my all time favourites; his name is Doctor Woodson, Fondly known in the barn as, of course “Woody”.
One of Woody’s co-owners that I have had the distinct pleasure of meeting was a man by the name of Winston Owen. Bobby Tibbitts, who trains Woody, introduced me to Winston a couple of years back when Woody first came to the barn. Just like Woody, Winston seemed to be involved in horse racing because he loved
the sport so much. Winston would show up every now and again to see Woody train or work and he would always come up to me after the work with an immense infectious smile on his face and ask what I thought. Winston knew that I loved Woody as much as he did and we would chat about him with great glee. Winston would always go and have a chat with Woody and I’m rather sure, thank him for bringing him such immeasurable pleasure in life. Whenever Woody won a race Winston would always send me a thank you gift. On a few occasions while I was having a cup of tea in the staff cafeteria at Woodbine, Winston showed up and joined me for a chat about horse racing and especially Woody.
Winston Owen was one of those small lesser known owners that loved horses and horse racing. One of those owners that horse racing needs to fill races and contribute to the Sport of Kings with such contagious enthusiasm. He showed his gratitude to Lenny, who is Woody’s groom, to Bob and to me with a profound appreciation.
Winston lost his battle with that wretched disease, Cancer, in early March of 2006. He will be sadly missed by a great number of people not the least of whom will be Lenny, Bob and myself. I know he will also be missed by Woody.

Equine Guelph Groom Orientation Sessions
My first time at Woodbine
You did not cross the line
Five thirty in the morning
Before the sun shine
Without seeing Jim Irvine
He was very pleasant and kind Summer or just before the snow melts Nicely dressed wearing his felt
The man filled with love and care
The east gate has made their repairs And I see not a statue of you there Every time I cross the gate I salute you With an imaginary glass of wine
You’re in my memory and mind
I hope wherever you are, that you are relaxed And the chair that you sit in does recline
I asked and they remember you
From all the back stretch crew
Peace be with you always
Mr. Irvine

Give Right of Way to Ambulance
Reminder
This is a reminder to all persons on the backstretch at Woodbine to give the right of way to the Ambulance when the lights are flashing.
The lights will be flashing when the ambulance is on its way to a serious call however the siren will not be used for the sake of the horses. All persons in vehicles as well as exercise riders on horses are asked to yield for the ambulance as it makes it’s way to or from an emergency on the backstretch.
