Alberta given 10-year Slots Extension
The Alberta Government has given the horse racing industry a 10-year extension on its current slot machine contract which means that slot machines at racetracks will continue to operate without changes until at least 2015.
There are currently close to 1000 slot machines divided between Alberta’s four racetracks. The racing industry received close to $41 million in revenue from the machines in 2005 which is 51% of the total revenue generated.

Woodbine Introduces 20 cent Win 4 Wagering
Hastings Racecourse’s 2005 Leading Rider, Apprentice Jockey Justin Stein, has officially moved his tack, his family and his agent to Woodbine for the 2006 season.
Coming off of a very successful meet in BC with 148 wins, a track record number of wins for an apprentice in one season, and
close to $2.5 million in purse
earnings, Justin made the
decision to move to Woodbine
after a successful few weeks in
Toronto at the end of the 2005
season.
man however he is hoping his ability as a rider will continue his momentum, “I would like to stay here after losing my bug. I think it would be a good thing for my career. My career is very important to me.”
Justin is currently renting a house in Brampton with his wife Renee and their 13 month old son, Owen.
In order to save his apprentice status Justin did not ride this winter and he is looking forward to competing for Sovereign honours with Woodbine reigning apprentice and leading rider, Emma-Jayne Wilson.
“My biggest goal is to get in
the competitive race for a
Sovereign Award for Apprentice.” said the upbeat jockey who will lose his apprentice status at roughly the same time as Emma in August.
Justin also says that he is anticipating a bit of a slow down when he gains the added weight of a journey-
Agent Trapper Barroby, the son of BC trainer Harold Barroby, followed Justin to Woodbine and says that the response so far has been positive.
“We have had lots of success together.” says Trapper of his decision to move with his rider, “It is not easy to find someone who you click with this well.”
Trapper has been a jockey agent in BC for the past twelve years and has represented the leading rider at Hastings for 5 out of the last 6 years including now retired Chris Loseth and
Beginning on opening day of the 2006 live thoroughbred meet on April 1, horseplayers will be able to bet a Win 4 wager for as little as 20 cents per combination.
To win a Win 4 wager, you must correctly select the winner in four consecutive races. This new wager joins last seasons similar innovation, the 20-cent minimum Superfecta wager where you select the top four finishers in a single race.
