Martimas & Trainer Ed Whyte
Martimas & Trainer Ed Whyte were inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame as Legends in 2001.
Ed Whyte, one of the leading trainers at the turn
of the century, ended the Seagram reign in the Plate when he won with Hendrie’s Butterscotch in 1899 and Lyddite in 1902. He also won the Plate in 1918 with Springside for G.M. Hendrie.

The Hendrie family silks are still seen at Woodbine today with Geordie Hendrie, a great, great grandson of William Hendrie (1831-1906), running his horses in the Hendrie colours.
Geordie grew up around horse racing, spending many Sundays at the racetrack with his grandparents in the early 1960’s. Geordie recalls that his grandmother would “hold court” at the racetrack and he would meet many of the illustrious people of the day.
In 1959 the elder George C. Hendrie became the President of the Ontario Jockey Club.
Trainers Ted Mann, Don Walker and Cliff Hopmans Jr. trained for George C. throughout the years.
Geordie’s father, George M Hendrie, walked hots as a teenager and had a genuine love of horses and horse racing. George M. eventually owned horses himself after partnering with his father George C. A partnership with his father was something Geordie had hoped for however sadly his father passed away in 1989 and the horses were dispersed with the estate.
Geordie Hendrie came back to racing in 2000 with a small string of horses and raced under Hendrie Stable Limited until 2015, changing to race under his own name George C. Hendrie in 2016. Geordie’s horses are trained by Mike Doyle and his most notable runners include: Tee Game, Critical Path, and Regal Valley, the latter of whom Geordie mentioned “had
the makings of a Plate horse but was sidelined due to injury.”

(Shakespeare - Cry of the Wild, by Unbridled’s Song) and a 2 year-old colt, Is Bourbon (Not Bourbon - Beaucette, by Mr. Prospector) Geordie is hoping that the Hendrie colours will once again be seen in the stakes in eld win enclosure in 2017. “I have yet to win a Stakes race,” commented Geordie, “I’m hoping to correct that this year.”
Is Bourbon is currently at Gail Wood’s Woodlands Farm in Hillsburgh and Geordie noted that Gail has had three George Hendrie’s as clients over the years.
